life isn't fair

dear you,

my mom has always said, "life isn't fair."
someone ate the last brownie?
"life isn't fair."
someone has new shoes?
"life isn't fair."
someone asked another girl out instead of me?
"life isn't fair."

my mom has always said, "life isn't fair."
someone gets denied food because of their societal position.
"life isn't fair."
someone lacks clothing because they have to choose between staying warm and eating.
"life isn't fair."
someone yearns to find anyone who will listen to and love them for who they are.
"life isn't fair."

my mom has always said, "life isn't fair."
my mind's response has been to surrender, move on and let go.
but i can't do that anymore.
not when people are starving because of unbalanced power.
not when people are dying because of speaking up.
not when people are silenced because of our own ignorance.

my mom has always said, "life isn't fair."
life isn't fair.
life isn't fair.
life isn't fair.

sincerely,
shae
